Great article! It’s all leading up to what’s known as “lighthouse factories” and the “4th Industrial Revolution”…

AI overview -

A lighthouse factory is a manufacturing facility that has successfully implemented Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) technologies; they use technologies like artificial intelligence and big data analysis to improve efficiency, drive sustainable growth, and protect the environment.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) and McKinsey & Co. identify lighthouse factories through a comprehensive scanning process. Lighthouse factories serve as a "beacon" for other manufacturers to follow. The WEF Global Lighthouse Network is a collaboration platform that helps manufacturers identify and adopt Industry 4.0 strategies. As of January 2023, the list included 132 lighthouse factories, including 13 sustainability lighthouses.

Unfortunately, I know enough about this effort and those driving it (the WEF, McKinsey&Co) to say I’m not exactly a fan as I know the players and their deeper motives behind it. It’s not just “a beacon” nor is it solely being applied where most beneficial… it’s being imposed on as many companies and processes as they can, even where it doesn’t really fit (like industries that require human handcrafting, such as apparel, handbags, footwear, and other soft goods). If they have their way, it’ll be imposed everywhere possible and eliminate as much of the human workforce as possible… welcome to “Industry 4.0”
